AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Carson-Newman swept Augusta State 10-6 and 13-0 Sunday
afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Lake Olmstead
Stadium.
The twinbill marked the season
opener for both teams.
The Eagles (2-0) forced extra
innings with a run in the top of the ninth in the opening game,
then plated five runs in the 11th inning for a 10-6 victory.
In the nightcap, Carson-Newman
blanked ASU 13-0 in seven innings, allowing only a first-inning
single by the Jags' All-American rightfielder Shannon
Wilkerson.
Carson-Newman collected 33 hits in
the two games, including eight for extra bases.
Tim Rawlings and Wilkerson each
tallied three hits for the Jags and Wilkerson collected two RBI in
the first game. Evan Patterson and Corey Lamson combined for four
hits each for the Eagles, while Derek Long and Aaron Vargas drove
in three runs each.
Brandon Lain and Justin Higdo
earned the wins for Carson-Newman. Sophomore reliever Blake
Pockrandt took the loss for ASU in the opener. Sophomore starter
Patrick Lowe allowed five hits in six runs – three earned
– in just 1.2 innings in the second game.
ASU and the Eagles wrap up the three-game set with a single game
Monday at Lake Olmstead Stadium. First pitch is slated for 2:00
p.m.
