WINGATE, N.C.
– The No. 25 Augusta State women's tennis team
dropped only one set on the afternoon and posted a 9-0 Southeast
Region win over Wingate Tuesday.
In the number one singles match, ASU's Fernanda Chiaparini
(pictured left) defeated Wingate's All-SAC standout Kara
Stasikelis 6-3, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, Chiaparini teamed with Nathalia Rodrigues
– the 34th-ranked singles player in the nation -- to take an
8-0 victory over Stasikelis and junior Pierce Dillard in the number
one doubles match. The Jags won the three doubles matches 8-0, 8-5
and 8-4.
ASU improved to 1-1 overall with the victory, while Wingate dropped
to 1-2 overall on the young season. The Lady Jaguars return to
Peach Belt Conference play Wednesday, Feb. 18, hosting Lander.
In men's action, ASU's Bernardo Fernandes won twice to
lead the No. 21 Jaguars to a 5-3 Southeast Region victory over
Wingate Tuesday afternoon. In the tightest match of the day,
Fernandes outlasted Wingate freshman Bruno Pudence (Sao Paulo,
Brazil) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in the battle of the number ones.
Augusta State improved to 3-1 overall with the victory, while
Wingate fell to 0-2 overall. The Jaguars host South Carolina State
Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Newman Tennis Center.
