AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State split an opening day doubleheader with Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
In the opener, Jaguar senior lefthander Joah Evans (1-0) and junior righty Wilson Taylor combined on a one-hitter for the Jaguars in a 1-0 non-conference victory over the Eagles. Taylor earned the save with three innings of no-hit relief. Evans struck out four and walked three over the first 6.0 innings.
Senior third baseman Andy Onufrak went to 2-for-3 for the Jags.
In game two, Carson-Newman used a four-run fifth inning to pull away for a 6-2 victory. Onufrak and Jake Sutton each had a pair of hits for ASU.
Sophomore righty Zach Breaux suffered the loss for ASU, which committed four errors. Four Jaguar pitchers allowed six hit and six runs, though none of the runs were earned.
The Jags and Eagles play a non-conference doubleheader beginning Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
