AUGUSTA, Ga. – Amber Peterson's 14 points on Senior Night weren't enough as No. 13 USC Aiken prevailed 68-63 in Peach Belt Conference action.
The loss dropped the Lady Jags to 11-13 overall, and 6-10 in the PBC. USC Aiken improved to 20-3, and 13-2.
ASU started well, playing a complete first half as they crashed the boards for a 21-16 rebounding advantage and played solid defense for a four point halftime lead. Peterson drained 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc to key the ASU attack early as no other Lady Jag scored more than four points in the first twenty minutes.
Out of the half, Augusta State extended the lead to eight on Brittany White's layup in traffic, but eight straight points by USC Aiken's Daniela Tarailo knotted things up at 33 apiece with over 16 minutes left to play.
The Pacers led by as many as five in the second half, but Becky Newhouse's trey from the corner tied it up again at 44-44, and White's three not a minute later put ASU up by two with under 12 minutes left.
But USC Aiken came back, finally going up eight on a traditional three-point play by Kaya Harris, and ASU could not mount a comeback in the final minutes.
Peterson tied for game-high scoring honors with 14 points, including 4-of-7 shooting from downtown. Junior forward Tiffany Jaecks added 11 points and five rebounds, while White tacked on 10 to go with nine assists.
Tarailo notched 14 points for USC Aiken, while Hannah DeGraffinreed added 12 and Harris 10.
The Lady Jags shot well, hitting on 22-of-49 (44.9 percent) of their shots, but USC Aiken continually got to the the charity stripe, as they attempted 11 more free throws and enjoyed a 20-13 advantage.
ASU returns to action at Lander Wednesday, Feb. 22 in PBC action. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
