AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State sophomore second baseman Jeff Rice jacked a three-run homer Saturday afternoon to spark the Jaguars to a 7-2 victory over Carson-Newman in game two of a non-conference doubleheader at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the victory, ASU salvaged a split of the twinbill and improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 1-2.
In game two, Jags' junior righthander Josh Barks (1-0) earned the win with 6.0 innings of work. He gave up six hits and allowed just one earned run with six strikeouts and two walks. Chase Johnston allowed three hits in 1.1 innings of relief, while Clint Echols worked 0.2 innings and Zack Breaux closed out the game with an inning of scoreless relief.
ASU junior first baseman Seth Foster went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Kevin Dodson, Curtis Parker and Matt Smith all went 2-for-4. Dodson and Smith combined for three runs scored and Parker drove in a run.
Trace Rogers and Bo Ausmus combined for seven hits for the Eagles.
In the first game, Carson-Newman's Robbie Thigpen fired a complete-game, five-hit shutout, with four strikeouts and only one walk. Lucas Mohon and Mason Guymon had two hits each for the visitors.
ASU newcomer Dylan Wall enjoyed a respectable debut, yielding five hits and three earned runs in 7.2 innings. He struck out three without a walk. Aaron Lewis tossed the final 1.1 innings, giving up just a pair of hits.
The Jags take on Paine College at Lions Field on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 2:00 p.m.
