ASU Outlasts Armstrong

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga.- After two sequential Peach Belt Conference losses, the Augusta State Lady Jaguars responded at home with a  75-70 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

ASU advanced to 9-2 overall, 2-2 in the PBC, while the Pirates slid to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in conference.

Senior Brittany White did it all with a team-leading 16 points, seven rebounds, six and steals. Hollingsworth added 15 points and Taylor Ayers notched 13. The Lady Jags had five less turnovers than AASU and scored 22 points of Pirate turnovers.

Armstrong junior Tori Klewicki-McNutt paced the Pirates with 24 points, while senior Demisha Mills added 11 of her own.

The Jags allowed Armstrong an 8-0 lead to start off the game, but quickly collected themselves after Tanchelle Hollingsworth hit two consecutive 3-pointers to bring ASU within two. A deep-ball from senior Brittany White at the 8:59 mark gave the ASU its first lead of the game, 21-20.

A pair of steals from White and Tiffany Jaecks led the defensive turnaround for ASU in the first half and resulted in a couple of Ayers' layups. The Jags out-rebounded AASU by two and scored nine points off turnovers.

Laci Schreiber stretched the ASU lead by eight on a jumper in the lane with 17:30 left. ASU missed their next six shots, committed three turnovers, and four fouls to allow the Pirates back into the game.

Armstrong tied it 50-50 at 12:55, but another trey from White put the Jags up and they never let the lead go. White's steal on a Pirate fast break attempt with 33 seconds left sealed the ASU victory.

"We are starting to get used to each other offensively," head coach Nate Teymer said. "We have to start getting some scoring from other places. It's not just one person that has to step up; it has to be a team effort."

The Jaguars continue conference play on Thursday, Jan. 17 when they host Flagler in Christenberry Fieldhouse for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
