Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – Making history on Thursday night, the Augusta State Lady Jaguars produced their best start since the program's inception with a 63-44 non-conference road win over Paine College in the HEAL Complex.
With their fourth straight win on Paine's campus, the Lady Jags improved to 13-2 overall, while the loss dropped Paine to 9-9 on the season.
"It's an accomplishment that can't ever be taken away from this group," said ASU third-year head coach Nate Teymer said. "It's nice to talk about, but what we want is the best finish in school history."
After missing their first five shots, the Lady Jags composed themselves and senior Tiffany Jaecks drained a 3-pointer from the left wing. Teymer inserted seniors Taylor Ayers and Eryka Menizes from the bench, and the duo transformed Paine's early momentum into a seven-point ASU run with 12:52 in the first half.
Menzies and senior Brittany White led all scorers with nine each in the first half, leading ASU to a 17-point advantage at the break.
Junior Tanchelle Hollingsworth led ASU with 12 points. Jaecks added 10 of her own, while junior Becky Newhouse (nine) and Menzies (nine) combined for 18 points. White and Ayers both added eight points, with Ayers pulling down nine rebounds and White eight.
Paine sophomore Ashley Watts led all scorers with 14 points while Kiara Johnson posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
A trey and jumper from Newhouse at the start of the second half propelled the Lady Jags to a 24-point lead with just under 7:00 left to play. Teymer utilized all 11 of his dressed players in the second half, coasting ASU to a victory before an 11-game Peach Belt Conference run closes out the regular season.
Peach Belt Conference play picks back up when the Lady Jags host UNC Pembroke on Saturday, Jan. 26 for the fourth annual Military Appreciation Day. Tipoff from Christenberry Fieldhouse is set for 5:30 p.m.
