Jaguars Post Season-High Points For Win

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Four Jaguars posted double figures, and a late run proved enough for a 75-66 win over crosstown rival Paine College in a back-and-forth affair Saturday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Down 60-57 with 7:46 remaining, GRU (2-3) freshman Tavia Sykes hit consecutive threes, and junior Whitney Rohrbach followed with a lay-in off a sharp Brooke McCants entry pass. Freshman Lonna Turner swished back-to-back jumpers two minutes later, and Rohrbach capped the 15-2 run by converting an and-one opportunity to finally put the game away.

Rohrbach finished with 13 points and 13 boards, while J Ashby's 15 points paced the Jaguar offense. Sykes added 12, all on threes, and Turner chipped in 11. McCants added nine to go with a career-high 10 assists and five boards.

The team effort was enough to counter a huge shooting night by Paine's Ashley Watts, who had 27 of the Lions' 31 first-half points on 10-of-14 shooting. She finished with 38.

The Jags sunk two free throws to start the game after Paine (1-4) got a technical for changing their lineup after they signed off on their roster. GRU hit three consecutive free throws to go up by four with just under 15 minutes to play. After making a three from the left side, Watts grabbed her own rebound and hit another contested deep ball to give Paine their first lead. GRU shot 28.6 percent from the field to PC's 39.3, but had 34 bench points to the Lions' two.

PC took a 39-37 lead off an Ariel Brown running layup in transition. Jags senior Dericka Griffis hit consecutive jumpers to keep the score even and freshman Tavia Sykes nailed a three from the corner to keep a 47-all game intact. Sykes hit another deep ball with 10:28 on the clock for a 55-53 lead and held on for the win. GRU shot 40.7 percent as a team to PC's 43.3 and outrebounded the Lions 45-to-37.

The Jags host West Georgia on Tuesday, Dec. 3 for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
