Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – GRU Augusta Women's Basketball won its fourth straight game on Tuesday night in a 65-60 battle against the Montevallo Falcons in Trustmark Arena to improve to 2-0 in the Peach Belt Conference.
The Jaguars (5-3) handed the Falcons (3-6) their third straight loss – led by Tavia Sykes' team-high 16 points. Jemimah Ashby added 14 and Brooke McCants posted 10, while Lonna Turner grabbed eight rebounds and Kelsey Fynnardt and Becky Newhouse added six boards each.
The Falcons, led by Taylor Beverley's double-double (21 points, 15 rebounds) and Shay Bonner's 12 points, out-rebounded GRU 49-to-33, but shot 31.0 percent from the field to the Jags' 40.7 percent. GRU took over the game at the charity stripe, shooting 76.2 percent from the free-throw line in a true team win as all nine Jaguars recorded 13 or more minutes while six had 20 or more.
Up by three with 15 seconds to play, the Jags forced a turnover on an attempted Montevallo-inbound pass. Ashby was fouled and made it to the free throw line to hold off the Falcons for the 65-60 win.
The Jags play at Coker on Saturday, Dec. 21 in Hartsville, S.C. for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game.
