ASU Takes USC Aiken Rivalry

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – Augusta State clinched to share the Peach Belt Conference's East Division title Wednesday night when they beat USC Aiken 66-60 for the Lady Jaguars' first win in four years in the Convocation Center.

USC Aiken (19-6, 12-6 in PBC) took the early lead, but ASU (20-5, 13-5) head coach Nate Teymer input senior Taylor Ayers who tied it at 11-all into the first media timeout. She gave the Jags the lead on a three-point play in their next possession, but the Lady Pacers responded.

Aiken went on a nine-point run, led by Mia Antoine and Daniela Tarailo. Tarailo hit a 3-pointer from the right side to give USCA a seven-point advantage. A jumper from ASU junior Jemimah Ashby ended the Pacers' streak and a steal and wide-open Tanchelle Hollingsworth for three brought ASU within one. Another ASU steal led to a layup from senior Taylor Ayers, but USCA banked one off the glass at the buzzer for a 31-30 halftime lead.

ASU was scoreless in their first three possessions of the new half until White and Ashby hit back-to-back buckets for a 36-33 lead. The Lady Jags held the lead until the eleven minute mark when Aiken's Mackenzie Reese completed a three-point play for a 42-42 tie. Tarailo took the lead on a four-point play, but Ashby kept the Jags in it with a pair of free throws and a layup.

A one-possession game tied 57-all; layups from Ayers and White and an Ashby jumper put ASU up 61-57 with under a minute to play. USCA missed in the lane and fouled Ashby on the ASU rebound, with Ashby making both free throws. Reese brought it to 63-60 with a 3-pointer from the right side, but ASU prevailed after the Pacers were forced to foul and the Lady Jags sunk the game-ending free throws.

The Lady Jags shot 45 percent to USCA's 34 in a game that saw 15 lead changes. ASU had 35 points off the bench to the Pacers' 16 and outrebounded them by one. Ashby had a game-high 20 points, while Ayers posted her sixth double-double with 15 points and 10 boards and Hollingsworth notched 11 points and six assists.

The Lady Jags play their last PBC game on Saturday, Mar. 2 at Flagler for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff in the Flagler Gymnasium.
