Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Flagler forces overtime at home and outlasts GRU Augusta for a 79-70 Peach Belt Conference win in the Flagler Gymnasium Wednesday Night.
The Jags owned the lead the entire first half led by freshman Tavia Sykes' 10 points and three assists. GRU senior Brooke McCants added three assists while the team shot 44.8 percent from the field to the Saints' 33.3 percent. Flagler's (5-9, 3-4 PBC) Williesha Spencer performed for her home crowd in the first half, scoring 16 points with a 50 percent field-goal percentage to keep the Saints within reach of GRU. The Jags went into the break ahead 35-30.
McCants nailed a three pointer from J' Ashby's assist for GRU's opening bucket of the second half. The Saints kept marching and never let the game get away from a 10-point deficit. Spencer's layup at the 9:00-minute mark made it a 10-point game and after she hit three free throws for being fouled at the arc, Flagler's Shelbi Lindsey hit double-figures with a three-pointer at 2:12 to trail the Jags 66-65. Treva Mason hit two Saints free throws to knot the game at 66-all. After Kelsey Fynaardt put GRU up 68-66, Mason responded with two more from the charity stripe to force overtime.
Flagler went up by six in OT where the Jags were eventually forced to foul and put the Saints on the line. GRU fell 79-70, despite outshooting Flagler 41.3 percent to 36.2 percent from the floor. Turnovers plagued the Jaguars and 32 of them were too much to overcome. The Saints won a 45-40 rebound contest, grabbing 21 offensive boards to GRU's 14.
Spencer scored a game-high 33 points while Mason posted a double-double with 17 points and 20 rebounds. Sykes led GRU with 17 points and five assists, while McCants nabbed 10. Becky Newhouse added four steals and Fynaardt eight rebounds.
GRU Augusta hosts North Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The University Village will be sponsoring the Freshmen Frenzy WHITEOUT, where fans are encouraged to wear white and pack out the CFH. The first 150 freshmen will receive free pizza from Papa Johns and a chance to win $150 in Jag Cash during halftime games of the men's game.
