KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The GRU Augusta men's golf team opened play in their last tournament of the fall at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic by shooting two-over 290 in the first round to sit third at the Turtle Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island.

The tourney, hosted by Charleston Southern, welcomed 20 teams to the par 72, 7,061-yard course for a three day, 54-hole event. The field includes Charleston Southern (Host), Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, Coastal Carolina, Creighton, Gardner-Webb, George Washington, Georgia Southern, GRU Augusta, High Point, Jacksonville State, Marquette, Missouri, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, USC Upstate, Temple, Western Kentucky, and Winthrop.
Winthrop sits first after the first 18 holes, while Missouri is second, GRU third, and Jacksonville State and Richmond are knotted in fourth.
Sophomore Jake Marriott battled the high winds and led GRU to tie for first after he shot his lowest round of his career with a six-under 66 (previous best 68). He began with two-straight birdies on one and two and ended his front nine at two-under par after he birdied and bogeyed again. Marriott came out hot on ten and carded another birdie, one of five on the back nine to put him six below par.
Robin Petersson finished next for the Jags and is tied for third with a two-under 70. Petersson notched four birdies, while teammate Jackson Stroup carded three and is tied for 25th with a 74 (+2).
Junior Maverick Antcliff struggled in round one and finished eight over par with an 80 – including two triple bogeys to tie for 78th. Jaguar freshman John Yi made his collegiate debut on Sunday and is tied for 94th with a first-round 10-plus 82. Round two of 18 holes takes place tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.
