Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta senior Kelsey Fynaardt heaved up a three pointer and nailed it with three seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough as GRU Augusta (0-3) was once again on the wrong end of a tightly contested affair to lose 56-55 against West Georgia (4-0) in Carrollton, Ga., on Saturday night.
GRU Augusta was down early 24-15 in the first half but that's when they turned it on scoring the next nine points highlighted by a three-point shot and layup from Joshlyn Belcher tying the game at 24-all. The Jaguars were not able to hold the lead though as West Georgia went into the break up seven, 34-27. The Jaguars played solid defense in the first half holding West Georgia to just a 24 percent field goal percentage, while recording their own 38.7 shooting percentage.
In the second half the Jaguars were able to pull within one multiple times and then finally tied it at 47-47 thanks to a layup by Kelsey Fynaardt. West Georgia stretched their lead back to five late in the contest, proving to be too much for the Jags to overcome. GRU Augusta scored 32 points in the paint to West Georgia's 22, however West Georgia was able to score 18 points off of Jaguars turnovers as the Jags were only able to score eight points off of turnovers.
The Jaguars were led by senior Kelsey Fynaardt who had her season-high with 15 points and eight rebounds. Kariel Hutt posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and two steals, while Joshlyn Belcher had seven points and three rebounds. Seandre Lee led the way for West Georgia scoring 19 points while adding five rebounds and three steals. Nicole Fasick had 11 points and one rebound for West Georgia as they second leading scorer.
The GRU Augusta women's basketball team returns to action on December 1 when they face Claflin in Orangeburg, S.C. at 5:30 p.m.
