Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – A poor offensive first half put GRU Augusta down early, and they never recovered as Coker took a 62-44 non-conference victory at Christenberry Fieldhouse Monday night.
The Jaguars (1-6) turned the ball over 11 times and struggled to find open looks near the basket as the Cobras (3-6) packed the paint and dared GRU to fire away from long range. Camille Gee finally nailed a three pointer from the left corner late in the first half to break a long scoring drought, but the Jags still entered halftime trailing 35-13.
GRU came out switching things up in the second half, attacking the basket off drives and forcing a few more Coker fouls – and beginning the half on a 15-4 run to trim the lead. However, Coker's Kelly Goodbout hit a shot clock-beating trey with 10 minutes to go and followed with another trey on their next possession, stymieing the Jags' momentum as GRU never threatened again.
Coker outshot the Jaguars 36.4 percent to 22.6 percent, winning the turnover battle 22-13. The Cobras' bench outscored GRU's 28-3.
Gee led the Jags with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting to go with five rebounds, while Kariel Hutt added 12 points and nine boards. Kelley Godbout paced Coker with 14 points, and Tanesha Stenson added 11 rebounds.
The Jags host Georgia Southwestern this Thursday, Dec. 18 at 1:00 p.m. for the Peach Belt Conference opener. The women will tipoff after the men's 11:00 a.m. game for Education Day.
