Strong Start Not Enough For Jaguars

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – On a Senior Day that showcased all five Jaguar seniors, GRU Augusta couldn't make a dominant first half showing stand up, falling 72-69 to the Flagler Saints to close out Peach Belt Conference play and their 2013-14 season.

Using hockey-style substitutions with five fresh players at a time throughout the first half, the offense clicked as they continued to flummox the Saints and find easy baskets beneath the rim. Whitney Rohrbach drained a 15-footer as the shot clock wound down and Brooke McCants followed with a trey to give the Jaguars a 16-point lead with 8:38 in the half. Tavia Sykes followed minutes later with back-to-back threes to maintain a large lead, but Flagler's Shorty Spencer refused to give in, pouring in 15 points in the half – including a 3-pointer with 0:35 on the clock to cut the lead to a 41-33 margin heading into the break.

Finally, with 13 minutes remaining, Treva Mason worked her way inside for a lay-in and the Saints' first lead since the opening minute of the game, at 50-49. The Jags battled, finally whittling away the lead on Tavia Sykes' three from the top of the key with 6:48 left. The teams stayed neck-and-neck for the next four minutes, until Sykes drove into the lane, drawing a foul and hitting both at the line for a 65-63 lead with 2:20 on the clock. But Flagler's Spencer kept finding her way to the line, as she hit four consecutive free throws to negate a Dericka Griffis put-back basket to make it 65-65 under minutes to play.

The Saints followed with a made jumper and more Spencer free throws to open a four-point margin, and J Ashby's last-second three to tie couldn't find the net.

Sykes had 20 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including making all seven of her free throws. The seniors had a strong showing on Senior Day, as well: Griffis added 10 points on 5-of-7 from the floor, adding five rebounds, and McCants chipped in nine points and three assists. Ashby added nine, and Becky Newhouse had two assists and three rebounds on the night.

Spencer led all scorers with 32 on 11-of-21 shooting, as Flagler shot 51 percent from the floor to the Jags' 39.7 percent. Mason added a double-double on 17 points and 15 rebounds.
