AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars matched nine hits with the Valdosta State Blazers, but couldn't overcome a late run to fall 5-3 in a single non-conference game at Lake Olmstead Stadium Wednesday night.
GRU Augusta (12-19) starter Tyler Grooms gave the Blazers (18-9) an early lead when a wild pitch scored Mike Reed for a 1-0 VSU lead in the top of the first inning. The Blazers added one in the third and fourth, before the Jaguar offense started a comeback when Connor Gilbert lead off the fourth with a double. Ryan Khan knocked a single to score Gilbert and GRU cut the game to a one-run contest when JD Sabo scored off Jeff Rice's RBI Single.
Ahead 3-2, Valdosta State brought in Matt Moses who held the Jags quiet until the ninth inning. VSU gave Moses a safe lead to work with, tacking on a run in the seventh and ninth, but GRU had plans for a two-out rally in their last at bat. Tyler Roberts, Sabo, and Ross Miles drew three straight walks – leading to new VSU pitcher Colby Wisdom who came in with two outs and the bases loaded. Rice took an RBI walk to make it a 5-3 game, but Wisdom got Hunter Boose to roll over to the shortstop to seal a 5-3 non-conference win.
Mosley (1-0) got the win, while Grooms (0-1) took the loss in 2.1 innings where he allowed three hits for two runs. Sophomore David Bermudez relieved in 3.2 innings, giving up four hits for one run and dealing two strikeouts. The Jaguars brought in three more arms from the bullpen, but VSU's nine hits were too much to withstand as they capitalized late in the game.
The Jags matched the Blazers' nine hits and were paced by Khan and Chase Loyd's 2-for-4 days. Rice went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Mike Reed, Kevin Cruz and Hunter Thompson all had two hits for VSU.
The Jaguars host the Young Harris Mountain Lions this weekend, starting with single Peach Belt Conference game Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
