Jags' Rally Too Late At Young Harris In 59-50 Loss

Box Score

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Jaguars (2-14, 1-8 PBC) trailed by 14 to the Young Harris Mountain Lions (8-8, 5-4 PBC) with under 10 minutes remaining in the game and went on a 9-0 run that fell short in the final minutes to fall 59-50 Monday afternoon in Young Harris, Ga.

Camille Gee paced the Jaguars with a team-high 13 points and put the team on the board first with a jumper at the 18:35 mark to start the scoring. Kariel Hutt connected on her second attempt from the floor, and after a steal from Joshlyn Belcher, Gee found the glass for a 6-0 Jaguar run.

Shereese Williams put the Mountain Lions on the board with a layup off an offensive rebound and from there things stayed close. Belcher and Gee traded jump shots in the next few GRU possessions, but YHC cut it back within two. The rest of the first half did not see the score deficit grow beyond five.

Briana Bell knocked down two free throws for the Mountain Lions with 27 seconds left until halftime, and Gee capped the opening 20 minutes with a jumper under five seconds to give GRU a 29-25 halftime lead. Bell paced the Mountain Lions on the day with 16 points.

Turnovers plagued the Jags at the start of the second half and YHC capitalized by cutting the lead and eventually tying the game at 31-all on a Chan Fann layup. The Jags also struggled from beyond the arc and only connected on two deep shots with six minutes left in the contest. YHC went on a 7-0 run and took an eight-point lead on two more free throws. Bell and Peyton Robertson connected on back-to-back three pointers in the ninth minute to give YHC a 48-34 lead.

Down by 14, the Jags hit consecutive jumpers from Tavia Sykes and Belcher. Gee made it a seven-point game with a three-pointer, only the third for GRU at that point, and Sykes followed with a layup after Hutt blocked the opposing YHC shot.

Now a five-point affair with 4:42 left to go, the Jags missed their next four attempts and committed more turnovers. YHC closed out the game on the free-throw line and won a 59-50 PBC contest. GRU recorded a better shooting percentage at 35.7 to YHC's 34.0, but the Jags were 6-12 at the charity stripe while the Mountain Lions went 22-30.

GRU only had two more turnovers than YHC, but the Mountain Lions scored 17 points off the Jaguars' mistakes. Sykes had 12 points for GRU off the bench and Belcher added 11.

The Jaguars continue league play on the road at Flagler on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a 1:30 p.m. game in St. Augustine, Fla.
