Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The GRU Augusta Jaguars responded from a halftime deficit and pulled out a 60-56 Peach Belt Conference victory on the road over the Flagler Saints in the Flagler Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
The Jaguar women (3-14, 2-8 PBC) were down by three to the Flagler Saints (4-12, 2-8 PBC) with 2:50 to go in the game when Camille Gee grabbed an offensive rebound and found Joshlyn Belcher for a game-tying three pointer. With the game tied at 54-all, Teosha Ray sunk the next basket on a layup for Flagler, but Tavia Sykes drove to the lane and found her way to the free-throw line where she knocked down two for GRU.
Tied again at 56-56, the Jags forced a turnover and Kariel Hutt made a layup off an assist from Sykes to give the Jags the lead with38 seconds to go. Flagler would be forced to foul and Hutt made two more free throws to cap the conference contest and give the Jaguars a 60-56 victory.
The win broke open a seven-game losing streak for the Jags. Sykes led with a game-high 22 points and Hutt added 20 in the win, while GRU shot 44.6 field-goal percentage to the Saints' 42.6. Flagler had a better three-point percentage and free-throw percentage, but the Jags had 16 second-chance points to Flagler's seven and outscored the Saints 37-28 in the second half.
Hutt added 10 rebounds to complete a double-double with her 20 points and Kelsey Fynnardt added eight points, three rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. Treva Mason led Flagler with 14 and Teosha Ray had 12.
GRU hosts UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Jan. 28 for a 5:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
