Box Score MORROW, Ga. - The GRU Augusta women's basketball team hit two free throws with six seconds left in the game to survive the Clayton State Lakers on Saturday night for the Jaguars' third consecutive Peach Belt Conference victory of the season.
The Jaguars (5-14, 4-8 PBC) let the Lakers (13-8, 7-5 PBC) score first and build an early 10-2 lead, but the Jags clawed back in the opening minutes and made it a one-basket game on back-to-back Tavia Sykes jumpers. Sykes got the start for GRU and ended up with 12 points.
Clayton State rebuilt a nine-point lead with 8:22 to go when Kenisha Jones-Barrett hit a layup. With just under four minutes to go in the opening half, GRU's Kelsey Fynaardt hit two free throws to bring it to a three-point game and after the teams exchanged jumpers, the Lakers hit two free throws to take a halftime lead 33-26.
Kayla Roberts made the opening basket of the second half, and Camille Gee, who led GRU with 14 points, hit a three pointer and sunk a jumper with 18:32 left in the game to tie the score at 33-all. The Lakers hit a free throw to keep the advantage, but Gee knocked down layup before Joshlyn Belcher added a three-pointer for a 38-34 GRU lead.
Gee's 14 paced GRU and Kariel Hutt just missed her ninth double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Gee added six rebounds and three steals, Hutt chipped in two steals and two blocks, and Belcher contributed eight points, with two steals and four boards.
The Lakers re-took the lead on Kayla Pryce's three pointer and it was a five-point game or closer down the stretch. With just over two minutes to go in the contest, the score was tied 47-all (there were seven tied scored and seven lead changes in the game), when the teams exchanged baskets to keep a tie game going with under a minute.
Sykes hit a jump shot to put GRU up by a basket, but Daquenna Moore answered for Clayton to knot the game again at 51-all. The Jaguars drove with six seconds left and Sykes was fouled. After head coach Nate Teymer called a timeout, Sykes sunk two at free-throw line to win a 53-51 game on the road, their third-straight victory.
The Jags continue Peach Belt Conference play on the road with a trip to Georgia College on Wednesday, Feb. 4 to meet the Bobcats at 5:30 p.m. in the Centennial Center in Milledgeville, Ga.
