Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team moved to 6-0 against Paine College with Head Coach nate Teymer at the helm as the Jaguars won a 83-68 non-conference game over Paine on Saturday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Jaguars (3-1) took the early advantage on two Kariel Hutt layups and Breonna O'Conner jumper. Augusta ended the first quarter on top 22-14 led by senior Kariel Hutt's six points and five boards in the opening 10 minutes.
Paine cut it to a one-basket game on a Janisha Wilkerson jumper with 25 seconds left in the first half, but Joshlyn Belcher found Camille Gee on the perimeter for a three ball to give the Jags a safer lead.
Augusta held the lead the entire first half and went into the pause on top 42-37. Hutt had 10 in the first half and ended the night with 23 pints and 13 boards for her 10th straight game with a double-double. Gee posted 13, Belcher 11 off the bench, and O'Conner 10 with four assists and three steals.
The Jags shot 45.6 percent from the floor to PC's 39.4. Augusta's 22 bench points to the Lions' 14 helped give them the edge and a 49-34 rebound battle proved the difference.
PC'S Tannasia Rhodes hit a three pointer in transition to open the second half and make the score 42-41. A put-back layup off a Jaguar miss tied the game for Paine at 44-all. A 9-3 run put the Jags back ahead 54-46 after Hutt stole the ball from Ashley Watts and found O'Conner for a fast-break layup.
Gee hit another trey off an inbound pass from Kayla Lovett to boost the lead. Cynara Pitt dished a no-look interior pass to a sprinting Belcher who pulled up a for a good Jaguar jumper. The Jags owned the fourth quarter and held off the Lions 83-68 for the final
Augusta travels to Fort Valley State in Fort Valley, Ga., on Tuesday, Nov. 24 for 6:00 p.m. single non-conference game.
