Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars produced a season high 21 hits in a 14-2 non-conference win over the Valdosta State Blazers on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Augusta (14-10) improved to 11-5 at home with the victory that was sparked by a 4-0 lead over VSU (14-10) in the first inning.
Senior Cole Thompson went a perfect 3-3 with two RBI and two runs, while sophomore Jim Wagner and junior Tyler Roberts each went 3-5 to combine for three RBI and two runs. Senior Drew Taylor and junior Clint Hardy each had two hits as well to highlight the Jaguar offense.
Two errors in the first inning allowed Augusta to jump ahead by two runs. Taylor scored Hardy on a single up the middle for the first run and a fielder's choice from senior Nick Rau plated senior Hunter Boose.
A bases-clearing double from C. Thompson scored Taylor and Rau for a four run lead. Taylor knocked his second hit of the game in the second inning to score Hardy again and Augusta led 5-0 heading into the third.
Making his third start, sophomore David Hagelston (1-2) went 6.0 innings and only gave up one run on five hits.
After four hits scored two runs in the fourth, the Jags ignited for more when C. Thompson belted his second hit of the game off the left-field wall with a double before junior Tyler Roberts scored him for an 8-0 lead.
Troy Massaro (1-2) made the start for VSU and gave up 10 hits for eight runs in 4.0 innings pitched. The VSU offense got on the board with a Marcus Sigmon solo home run in the sixth inning, but the early lead was too much to overcome.
The Blazers brought in seven pitchers to the game. Hagelston got the win for Augusta and Joey Stillwell, Jordan Kelly, and Casey Lenoch each made appearances out of the bullpen.
Augusta travels for a Peach Belt Conference series March 19-20 at Armstrong State in Savannah, Ga. The series begins on Saturday, March 19 with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
