PINEHURST, N.C. - The Augusta University men's golf team competed in the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst #2 on Monday and finished in sixth place 43-over par in the 12-team field.
The No. 2 Wake Forest Demon Deacons hosted the event at the 7,125-yards and par-70 course with 66 players in the 12-team event. Wake Forest won at 6-under par and 9 shots ahead of second place. No. 13 North Carolina notched second, No. 35 N.C. State third, No. 36 Duke fourth, No. 43 Virginia fifth. Augusta carded the sixth place slot in for the tournament.
The Jaguars sent Ben van Wyk, Hampus Wijkstrom, Dan Sheehan, Alex van Wyk, and Dawson Booth. The Jags started the day in seventh place after shooting a 289 (+9) and 300 (+28) first two rounds. AU was able to shave 6 strokes off of the previous day's score and shot a 294 (+14) on the final day of play. Tying for 8th in the tournament overall, Ben van Wyk led the way for Augusta with a 69 (-1), a 71 (+1), and a 72 (+2).
Wijkstrom tied for 27th while Dan Sheehan tied for 32nd. Alex van Wyk finished in a tie for 49th. Dawson booth rounded out the Jaguar squad for the day in a tied for 60th.
Michael Brennan of Wake Forest won the individual title at 5-under.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: Augusta, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Duke, NC State, Virginia, Furman, Boston College, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Davidson.
