Â
After a strong showing in their first tournament of the fall, the Augusta University men's golf team is back in action Sunday and Monday at the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern. The Jaguars are part of the 16-team field that will play 36 holes on Sunday and then 18 on Monday to crown a champion.
Â
The Jaguars are coming off a seventh-place finish two weeks ago at the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati as the field this week will be even stronger. Illinois, University of Houston, Indiana, Purdue, Arizona and Kentucky are among those that will tee it up.
Â
In their season opener,
Stefan Jacobs was the low Jaguar and was fifth overall. The team finished seventh and in the top half of the field.
Â
Augusta coach Steven Paine said they need to clean up the little mistakes to contend in Chicago.
Â
"This is probably one of the strongest fields we'll play against this fall," said Paine. "There will be a lot of good teams we'll be competing against so it will be interesting to see where we stand. But at the same time, expectations are very high. We have a lot of firepower, we can make a lot of birdies and if we can just stay disciplined and play Jaguar golf, I think we'll like where we stand at the end of the week."
Â
Sophomore
Josh Koekemoer and redshirt junior
Bo Blanchard II each carded top 50 finishes in the first event of the fall part of the season.
Â
"I think we played well, we did a lot of things at a high level," Paine said. "We led the field in birdies, which is a big plus. Now it's just cleaning up some of the smaller things, making bogeys on par fives, three-putts and bogeys inside 150 yards. Those are a lot of things we take a lot of pride in, so as we head into the next event if we clean those up, we'll be right where we need to be."
