Box Score AUGUSTA, GA - Picked to be the top two teams in the Peach Belt Conference preseason, the Augsuta women knocked off Columbus State 63-52 Saturday afternoon at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars improve to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt Conferenc. The Cougars fall to 7-4 overall, 1-1 in conference play.
Augusta used a big third quarter as the defense once again put the clamps on their opponent. For the game, Jaguars held the Cougars to just 31.1% shooting for the game while Augusta shot 51%.Â
Quinasia Abercrombie led AU with 14 points, six rebound and a pair of steals.
Mone Florence tallied 10 points that included a pair of three pointers as the Jag offense was a balanced scoring attack.
Tyasia Freeman had nine points with
Yamani Paul coming off the bench to put home eight points while grabbing six rebounds.
Sierra Burns also scored eight on the afternoon.
The Jags wasted little time in getting the offense going as they ran out to an 8-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. But Columbus would rebound in the second quarter and actually take an 18-16 lead in the second quarter. But
Autumn Phillips would make a lay-up with just five seconds left in the half as the Jags took a 26-24 lead to the break.Â
In the third, Augusta really flexed their muscle outscoring Columbus 12-4 in the first few minutes of the half. Paul hit back-to-back baskets as the Jags would surge to a ten point lead, one they would never relinquish.Â
The Jags went 8-12 from three point land and 9-11 from the free throw line, both proving to big factors in the victory.
Augusta will next be in action Wednesday night when they travel to Morrow, Georgia for a contest against Clayton State.Â
