Augusta, Ga. - Kent Moon hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, but it was not enough as Georgia Southwestern picked up a series opening 14-5 win Friday night at Jaguar Field. AU is now 6-1 in Peach Belt Conference play and 10-7 overall. The Hurricanes are now 6-1 in conference play and 11-6 overall.

The Jaguars had just five hits on the night with Davis Newman collecting a triple and two runs scored. Jake Vachon had two late singles and Nathan Martin added the other safety for Augusta.

On the mound, Griffin Stewart suffered the loss. Stewart gave up four runs in the second inning, but otherwise pitched well. He went 5.1 innings and allowed 5 runs, four earned, on five hits. He did strikeout seven Cane batters.

The star of this one was Georgia Southwestern's Evan Koehler. One of the top pitchers in the conference showed why as he went seven innings and gave up just three hits with nine strikeouts for his fourth win of the year. 

After the Canes scored four runs in the second, the Jags had a chance to get one back in the bottom of the second. Newman tripled to lead off the inning. But on a pitch that got away from the catcher, he was thrown out at the plate.

It wasn't until the seventh when the Jags finally got on the board courtesey Moon's fifth homer of the year, a three-run shot. He would add a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Martin also picked up a RBI in the ninth. 

Augusta and Georgia Southwestern will square off in game two of the series Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
