AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Anderson rallied for three runs in the eighth inning
Tuesday afternoon and picked up a 10-7 non-conference road win over
Augusta State at Jaguar Field.
The Trojans (1-0) outhit ASU 16-11,
though the Jaguars collected six extra-base hits.
Junior rightfielder Shannon
Wilkerson homered twice and drove in five runs to pace ASU (0-4)
offensively. Sophomore centerfielder Alex Walker went 4-for-5 with
three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Junior Evan Smith and freshman
Adam King had two hits.
B.J. Smith led Anderson with four
hits while Josh Grubbs and Matt Hill booked three hits each. Grubbs
and Andrew Davis drove in a pair of run while Hill hit a solo homer
and scored four runs.
Senior righthander Chris Pitts
(1-0) earned the win in relief, striking out nine over the last
four innings. He allowed four hits and two runs after starter Blair
Carson gave up seven hits and five runs in the first five
innings.
Five pitchers saw action for the
Jags and combined on 11 strikeouts. Freshman righty Wilson Taylor
worked the first inning and was charged with three hits and three
runs. Sophomore righty Patrick Lowe took the loss, surrendering the
go-ahead run in the eighth.
Anderson jumped ahead 7-1 in the
fourth before the Jags plated three runs in their half of the
fourth. ASU pulled even at 7-all in the bottom of the sixth after
Evan Smith's leadoff single chased Carson from the game.
Walker greeted Pitts with an
RBI-single up the middle after Smith moved into scoring position on
a passed ball. Wilkerson then blasted his second homer of the day
and third in two games with a straight-away drive to centerfield
that tied the game at 7-all.
A leadoff walk to Grubbs to start
the eighth, combined with an error, a wild pitch and four singles
contributed to the Trojans' three-run eighth.
ASU travels to Florence, S.C., this weekend to compete in the South
Atlantic Challenge. The Jags take on Coker on Friday, Feb. 6 at
3:00 p.m., before facing St. Andrews at 6:00 p.m., on Saturday and
Limestone at noon on Sunday.
