FLORENCE, S.C.
– Francis Marion swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader
from Augusta State Sunday afternoon at Cormell Field.
The Patriots held off ASU 8-5 in
game one, then topped the Jaguars 4-2 in the second game to
complete the sweep of the weekend series.
The losses dropped ASU to 21-27
overall and 8-13 in the conference, while FMU improved to 29-13-1
overall and to 16-9 in the PBC.
The Patriots jumped out to an 8-1
lead in the opening game before ASU plated four runs over the final
three innings. Seniors Jorge Virguez and Kevin Owens, along with
junior Evan Smith, tallied two hits each. Owens and Tristan Toorie
belted homers for the Jags.
ASU freshman righthander Wilson
Taylor (2-4) suffered the loss, yielding 10 hits and six runs
– four earned – in 5.1 innings. Junior righty Tony
Baker worked the last 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and a pair of
unearned runs.
In game two, FMU starter Jeremiah
Meiners limited ASU to one run on two hits through eight innings.
Brandon Forshee came on to strikeout Tony Baker with the tying runs
on base in the ninth to end the game and record his fourth
save.
ASU took a 1-0 lead in the second
when Evan Smith drove in Toorie with an RBI groundout. The Patriots
scored all four of their runs in the fifth frame on an RBI-single
by Lee and a three-run homer by Barrett Kleinknecht. ASU scored
once in the ninth on an RBI-single by Owens.
Tim Rawlings had a pair of doubles
to pace the Jags. Senior lefty starter Ben Dukes went the first 5.1
innings, giving up six hits and four runs with a pair of
strikeouts.
ASU travels to Carrollton on Wednesday, April 22 to take on West
Georgia in a non-conference tilt at 3:00 p.m. The Jags host Senior
Day on Thursday, April 23, facing Erskine at 3:00 p.m. at Jaguar
Field
