AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State improved to 5-0 on the season with a 59-39 non-conference victory over Paine Thursday night in the final men's college basketball game in historic Carter Gymnasium.
The win was the seventh straight in the series for the 18th-ranked Jaguars against Paine. ASU has won eight of the last nine and 10 of the last 13 games with the Lions. The Jags evened their all-time record at Paine to 4-4, while Metress improved to 14-1 in his coaching career against PC.
Senior guard Caleb Brown came off the bench to tally a team-best 11 points and eight rebounds and was the only Jag to reach double figures in scoring. Senior forward Franck Ndongo grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds while sophomore guard Ben Purser notched nine points and seven boards.
Thomas Broughton booked a game-high 17 points for the Lions (1-3) and reserve Chris Hunt added 10 points.
The 39 points allowed were the fewest since the 1978-79 season, when the Jags won at USC Aiken 29-26.
>ASU shot 40 percent from the field and owned the rebounding edge 40-31. The Jags held Paine to 16 points in the first half, the fewest by an opponent so far this season. The Lions shot just 4-of-22 from the field (18.2 percent) and were only 1-of-14 from long range.
The Jags open Peach Belt Conference play on the road on Saturday, Dec. 4 when they take on Armstrong Atlantic State (3-1) in Alumni Arena at 3:30 p.m.
