AUGUSTA, Ga. - The
seventh ranked USC Aiken baseball team claimed their
second-straight Outback Cup over their rival, the Augusta State
Jaguars on Tuesday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Pacers swept both games on both sides of the Savannah River by
claiming the 12-9 non-conference win over Augusta State on Tuesday
at Lake Olmstead Stadium after winning the first game 9-3 on Mar.

The Pacers won the inaugural Outback Cup last year by claiming both
victories in Aiken, S.C. at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
With the loss, Augusta State falls to 9-19 on the season, while USC
Aiken improved to 21-8 overall.
Down 0-1 in the top of the second inning, Matt Key tied it up for
the Pacers when he sent a one-hopper to the second baseman to score
Travis Howard .
A few moments later Alex Franklin put the Pacers up 2-1 when he
sent a single shot to left field to score Nick Aranas.
Sophomore slugger Stephen Carmon extended the Pacer lead to four in
the fourth inning when he sent the ball for a three-run home run
ride over the right field wall putting the score at 5-1.
The Pacers continued to stretch out their lead with another scoring
drive of four runs in the top of the fifth inning when Bill Rice
stole home on a wild pitch while Aranas found his way from first to
third on a subsequent error by the catcher.
A few pitches later, Key was able to capitalize on Aranas'
position by driving him home with a shot up the right side to
extend the Pacer lead to six.
Alex Franklin then batted in Key with a single to shallow right
field putting the score at 8-1.
Will Fulmer scored the last run of the drive for the Pacers when he
crossed the plate on another wild pitch to put USC Aiken up by
eight with a score of 9-1.
Tristan Toorie stalled the Pacers' drive when he batted in
Alex Walker and then crossed the plate himself on a wild pitch to
put the score at 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Key picked up where he left off in the top of the seventh inning
when he drove in senior backstop Gary Asbill from first with a deep
triple off the centerfield wall.
Fulmer was able to once again contribute to the last run of the
inning for the Pacers when he put the Pacers up 11-3 with a
sacrifice fly to right-center field scoring Key.
The Jaguars came out in the bottom of the seventh inning with a new
spark of life, cutting the Pacer lead to just three. Casey Hanrahan
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to move Caleb Saggus
across the plate before Tony Baker ripped a grand slam over the
left field wall to bring the score back within reach at 11-8.
Tripp Warrick extended USC Aiken's lead back out to four when
he brought Rice across the plate off a shot to the second
baseman.
Augusta State took the game down to the wire in the bottom of the
ninth inning when Walker crossed the dish for the fourth time for
the Jaguars off an error by Carmon to put the score at 12-9.
The Pacers were able to hold on for the win over the waning moments
behind steady pitching by Tyler Stephan and smart fielding to
secure the win.
Carmon, Fulmer and Key lead USC Aiken at the plate seeing Carmon go
3-for-5 with one home run and three RBIs. Fulmer went 2-for-3 with
two runs and an RBI while Key went 2-for-3 with two runs and three
RBIs of his own.
Chase Johnston suffered the loss for Augusta State in four innings
of work. He gave up nine hits and nine runs to fall to 0-4 on the
season.
Jason Cochcroft garnered the win on the mound for the Pacers
pitching five innings. He improves to 3-0 for the 2010 campaign
after giving up just three hits and one run.
ASU hosts Francis Marion over the weekend in a three-game Peach
Belt Conference series. The Jags and the Patriots meet in a single
game on Saturday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m., and then square off in a
doubleheader on Sunday, March 21 at noon.
