ASU Splits With No. 19 Saints

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State split a pair of Peach Belt Conference games with North Georgia on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The Saints took game one 8-7 in 10 innings, while the Jags won 8-3 in the nightcap.

With the split, the Jaguars moved to 15-26 overall and 5-15 in the conference, while North Georgia is now 28-14 on the season and 14-9 in the league.

ASU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Kenny Smith would reach base on a fielders' choice and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single up the middle from Casey Hanrahan would score Smith.

The Saints would respond in the fourth adding four runs. Anders Oster homered, and Kenny Bellavance would score on a couple of errors.

In the seventh, ASU would regain the lead with a three-run homer from Cole Payne that would give the Jags a 4-2 lead. The Saints would another run in the top of the eighth making the score 4-3.

The Jags would add three more runs in the bottom of the eighth with a homer from Justin Appel that would score Smith and Tony Baker. NGCSU strung some hits together and added four runs in the top of the ninth to make the score tied at 7-all.

In the top of the 10th, the Saints added a run after Adam Baker reached first on being hit by a pitch. Lance Pope came in to pinch run for Baker, and Pope advanced to second on a sac bunt from Davy Wallach. Pope would then score on a single from Craig Brisson. ASU could not come up with a run in the bottom of the 10th, giving the Saints an 8-7 victory over ASU in game one.

In the nightcap, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when ASU would string along a few hits and knock in two runs to take a 2-0 lead over the Saints.

In the sixth, Appel doubled to left field, scoring Tony Baker and Payne, to give the Jags a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Jordan Erisman would break ASU's Joah Evans no-hitter with a double to right field that would score Brisson. Erisman would then score on single from Chad Sage, however it would not be enough as the Jags would take game two 4-2.

Stephen Ramsey was tagged with the loss in game one and dropped to 1-3 on the season. Ramsey relieved Chase Johnston in the ninth and allowed one run on three hits. Wilson Taylor earned the start and gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Johnston relieved Taylor in eighth and allowed four runs on three hits in an inning of work.

Justin Yackee (2-0) earned the win in game one for the Saints. Yackee gave up three runs on four hits and had in 2.0 innings of work. Yackee relieved Chris Rearick who earned the start. Rearick pitched 7.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits and booked nine strikeouts. Jacob Rickett relieved Yackee in the 10th and earned his ninth save of the year.

In game two, Joah Evans earned the win in game two and improved to 2-5 on the year. Evans pitched 7.0 innings and allowed no hits until the seventh inning. Evans gave up two runs on two hits and had two strikeouts. Josh Barks relieved Evans in the eighth and allowed no hits and booked four strikeouts.

Blake Hobby was the tagged with the loss for the Saints in game two and dropped to 5-4 overall. Hobby gave up two earned runs on eight hits and had five strikeouts.

Baker led the Jaguars with four hits and an RBI, while Appel had three hits a homer and five RBI on the afternoon. Payne had two hits and four RBI on the afternoon. Alex Walker and Tristan Toorie and Hanrahan each had two hits on the day.

Sage led the Saints with four hits and two RBI on the afternoon. Oster and Brisson had three hits each on the day with Oster having two RBI and Brisson with one RBI.

The two teams close out the three-game series on Sunday at Jaguar Field. The first pitch for the single game is slated for 1:00 on Sunday afternoon. Tomorrow afternoon's game is also senior day.
