COLUMBUS, Ga. -
Columbus State registered a 19-4 win Saturday in the first game of
a scheduled Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Augusta State
at Ragsdale Field. The second game, after two lengthy delays for
rain and lightning, was called after three and one-half innings.
ASU had built an 8-2 lead in the series finale, but that result
went by the wayside as the game's statistics were wiped out
by the cancellation.
The Jags grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second of game one
when Tristan Toorie reached on a leadoff single and freshman third
baseman Cole Payne followed with a two-run homer to
left-center.
The Cougars responded in their half of the frame, plating four runs
to go up 5-2. Eric Weiss led the 24-hit CSU attack by going 4-4,
while Jason Rogers drove in six runs.
Thomas Campbell (7-2) earned the win, allowing six hits and four
earned runs. He endured a one hour, 26-minute weather delay and
finished the sixth inning before giving way to Brodie Leibrandt. He
pitched the final three innings to earn a save, allowing just one
hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Payne led ASU (15-31, 5-18) with two hits, including a double.
Senior Carl Burrow and freshman Curtis Parker each drove in a run.
Senior Tony Baker, Burrow, Parker and Toorie accounted for all
seven of the Jags' hits.
Junior lefthander Joah Evans (2-6) took the loss, surrendering 11
hits and nine earned runs over the first three innings. Stephen Ramsey, Robbie Downing and Chase Johnston all saw action on the
mound for the Jags. Johnston was the most effective, working two
scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
ASU closes out the 2010 season at West Georgia on Wednesday, April
28, with the first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m., in Carrollton,
Ga.
