AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Augusta State posted a pair of competitive 8-4 decisions
key a sweep through doubles competition and captured four singles
matches in straight sets in posting a 7-2 win over visiting UNCP in
women's collegiate tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Newman
Tennis Center.
Augusta State (12-7, 7-5), who is listed 29th in the latest
Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, remained
perfect against unranked competition this season with the victory.
The setback for the Braves (9-12, 2-8 PBC) was highlighted by
singles victories from Janna Oxendine and Christian Minnick, but
marked the sixth loss of the season to nationally-ranked foes.
ASU's tandem of Camila Correa and Luiza Pires completed an 8-2 win
at No. 3 doubles over Maricel Quintero and Christian Minnick to
give the Jaguars their first team point of the day, but ASU would
follow up with a pair of 8-4 victories on court Nos. 1 and 2 to
take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
Marina Ferreria and Bianca Machado bested UNCP's Oxendine and Jenna
McGary at No. 1 doubles, while Victoria Lindqvist and Keaton
Sanders topped Minnick and Maricel Quintero-Prieto at No. 3
doubles.
Correa yielded just two games in posting a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4
singles over Quintero-Prieto, and Ferreria clinched the team
victory for Augusta State with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court No. 2 over
Winterbottom. ASU's other singles victories came from Lindqvist,
who defeated McGary 7-5 and 6-3 at No. 1 singles, as well as
Machado who turned in a 6-4, 6-2 win over Pierson.
Minnick would grab the first point of the day for UNCP by blanking
Keaton Sanders 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, while Oxendine followed a
short time later with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Pires.
Augusta State will be back in action again on April 13 when the
Jaguars close out regular season play against Newberry at the
Newman Tennis Center. Tennis action is set to get underway at 2
p.m.
