VALDOSTA, Ga. -
The No. 16 Augusta State softball squad split a pair of
non-conference games with Valdosta State on Tuesday afternoon in
Valdosta, Ga. The Jaguars took game one 2-1 and the Blazers took
game two 1-0 in 10 innings.
Augusta State moved to 35-13 on the year, while Valdosta State
moved to 26-3 on the season.
Kimberly Kennedy, improving to 7-2 on the season, earned the win in
game one. Kennedy allowed only one earned run on four hits and
booked five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Sara DeMuth relieved
Kennedy in the seventh and gave up only one hit and had a
strikeout.
In the first inning, Kacey Sims reached first on an error from Amy
Brightwell. She moved from first to third on a single up the middle
from Kristen Jones and scored on a passed ball.
Valdosta State answered in the second inning with Shirey's homer,
but then the bats went quiet until the seventh. Alysha Krier hit a
solo homer to claim a 2-1 lead and VSU could not answer in the
bottom of the seventh.
DeMuth was tagged with the loss in game two and dropped to 14-6
overall. DeMuth gave up one run on four hits and struck out 10
batters in 9.1 innings of work.
In the 10th inning of game two, each team started with a runner at
second base. Augusta State could only move its runner to third, but
Shaw scored for VSU.
After advancing to third on a bunt form Brightwell, Shaw scored off
Hutchens' bunt.
Kristen Jones paced the Jags offensively on the afternoon with two
hits, while Alysha Krier had a hit and an RBI on the day. Kacee Camp had the Jags only other hit of the day.
The Jags will be back in action on Saturday, April 10 when they
travel to Aiken, S.C., to take on USC Aiken for a Peach Belt
Conference doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
