AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Anderson took advantage of a pair of miscues by Augusta State Tuesday afternoon and picked up a 5-3 non-conference victory at Jaguar Field.
Trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Jaguars (2-3) rallied for two runs and had the bases loaded with two outs. ASU freshman Mike Smith singled home Tristan Toorie but Casey Hanrahan overran the third base bag and was tagged out to end the rally and the game.
The Trojans (2-3) moved in front with two runs in the third inning and three in the fourth off ASU freshman righthander Kevin Dodson. Making his collegiate debut, Dodson appeared to work out of a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the fourth when he induced a foul ball from AU's Billy Roper. But Jaguar sophomore first baseman Brac Barton couldn't handle the pop-up near the first-base dugout and Roper delivered an RBI-single.
Two more singles and a bases-loaded walk ensued, chasing Dodson from the game. Junior lefthander Robbie Downing induced a flyout to the first batter he faced to end the inning, but not before Anderson had taken a 5-0 lead.
Toorie and Jake Sutton each registered a pair of hits, while Sutton, Hanrahan and Mike Smith ach had an RBI.
Anderson's Thomas Padro and Blake May combined for six hits and four RBI and Erick Sanderson added a pair of singles.
Dodson (0-1) took the loss for ASU, allowing eight hits and five runs -- just two earned -- in 3.2 innings. Downing, Chase Johnston and Matt Blume combined for 5.1 innings of scoreless relief and limited the Trojans to just three hits.
Anderson starter Brett Campbell (1-0) picked up the win, yielding three hits and an unearned run in 5.0 innings.
The Jags travel to Wingate for a three-game weekend series with the Bulldogs. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2:00 p.m., with a single game slated for Sunday, Feb. 13 at 1:00 p.m., at Ron Christopher Stadium.
