AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State lefthander Joah Evans fired a complete-game, one-hit shutout Tuesday night to lead the Jaguars to a 4-0 victory over 12th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The win lifted the Jags (14-15) to within a game of .500, while the Pirates (21-5) suffered just their fifth loss.
Evans improved to 2-3 on the season with by far his best effort of the season. The senior from Chauncey, Ga., registered five strikeouts and only walked one batter -- in the ninth inning.
Armstrong's lone hit was Alex Frederick's leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning. The Pirates had just one baserunner reach third base.
Seniors Tristan Toorie, Alex Walker and Casey Hanrahan each had two hits, as did junior Caleb Saggus and freshman Kevin Dodson. Torrie had a run-scoring double and a two-run single.
Senior Andy Onufrak had an RBI-single for the Jags' final run in the fifth inning and Saggus stole his Peach Belt Conference-leading 30th stolen base.
The Jags hit the road Wednesday for a 2:00 p.m., non-conference matchup at Winston-Salem State in Winston-Salem, N.C.
ASU then travels to Florence, S.C., for a three-game PBC weekend series with Francis Marion. The Jags and Patriots play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 at 3:00 p.m., at Cormell Field and meet in a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
