AIKEN, S.C. -- USC Aiken opened the second half on a 19-2 run Monday night to blow open a tight Peach Belt Conference contest and register a 76-54 victory over Augusta State in the Convocation Center.
The loss, the most-lopsided in the 58-game history of the series, snapped a three-game winning streak for the Jaguars and also marked their fifth consecutive regular-season setback at USCA. ASU dropped to 1-5 all-time vs. the Pacers in the Convocation Center since the venue opened with the beginning of the 2007-08 season.
With the victory, the East Division-leading Pacers improved to 12-2 on the season and remained undefeated in the PBC at 6-0. ASU slipped to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the league.
USC Aiken's 74 points were the most allowed by the Jags this season, while ASU's 54 points scored marked a season low for the Jags.
Freshman forward Devon Wright-Nelson paced ASU with 14 points, senior guard O'Neal Armstrong had 11 off the bench and junior forward Travis Keels booked 10 points and three blocks. Sophomore Harold Doby added eight points and a team-best six rebounds before fouling out.
Sterling Council led a well-balanced USCA attack with 17 points and four assists. Jesse Seilern pitched in 12 points and canned three 3-pointers. Re'Mon Nelson notched 11 points and Joel Gierbolini chipped in 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds off the bench.
The Jags, who entered the game ranked first in the PBC in fewest turnovers (10.4 tpg.), suffered a season-high 20. They committed seven on their first nine possessions of the second half and the Pacers took advantage. When Ronald Zimmerman swished free throws after being fouled at the 14:36 mark, USCA had sprinted out to a 51-30 lead.
Aiken led by as much as 25 after a Chase Holmes' layup with 9:03 left and the Jags never got closer than 15 the rest of the way.
ASU heads to Milledgeville, Ga., on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to take on Georgia College at 7:30 p.m., in the "Battle Of The Cats" at the Centennial Center.
