AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 24 Columbus State Cougars (20-11, 8-7 PBC) put three on the board in the second and never look back as they notched a 9-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State (9-24, 2-16 PBC) Sunday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Cougars started with a single, then with two outs got a walk to put two men on. Kenny Miller hit a high chopper just in between the mound and second base to score the first CSU run, and Navarro Hall followed with a two-RBI single to put CSU up 3-0 early.
ASU responded by loading the bases in the bottom of third, as Ryan Khan and Justin Thigpen knocked singles and Caleb Saggus walked with two outs, but the Jaguars couldn't get a run across.
Columbus State got another three runs in the seventh with single, walk, throwing error, and RBI single to knock starter Dylan Wall (0-5) out and take a commanding lead. Wall hurled six innings, giving up four hits and five runs (none earned) and issuing five walks on the day. He struck out one.
The Jags got a run in the eighth as Saggus reached second on an error and scored on Clay Tucker's RBI double to the right center field gap, but CSU tacked three more on in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
Will Casey went 7 2/3 innings for the win to improve to 3-2 for the Cougars, allowing eight hits and one run. He struck out nine while walking just one.
Ryan Khan led the Jaguars offensively with two singles in two at-bats, while Eric Weiss (2-for-5, two runs scored) paced CSU.
The Jaguars return to Lake Olmstead Stadium to host rival USC Aiken Wednesday, March 28 in the Outback Cup. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
