AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State (11-25, 3-17 PBC)dropped game one 5-4 to Georgia Southwestern (6-27, 4-15 PBC), but rebounded behind Josh Barks' complete-game effort for a 5-1 Peach Belt Conference win in game two to salvage a split on the day.
In the second game, Barks (3-6) allowed just a solo shot in the third, part of five hits he scattered. He struck out six and walked two, retiring nine of ten batters for an easy stretch in innings 5-8 to mark his most dominant performance of the season.
The Jaguars tied things up in the fifth as Matt Smith walked, moved to second on Ross Miles' sac bunt, and scored on a Caleb Saggus single.
But ASU wasn't done, getting three in the bottom of the sixth. Clay Tucker started things off with a double. Seth Foster singled him home. Justin Appel walked. Foster moved to third on a wild pitch, and then Appel advanced to second on a throwing error. Smith singled to bring Foster around, and then Miles singled to plate Appel for a 4-1 lead.
The Jags got an insurance run in the seventh after Saggus singled, stole second, and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt.
Tyler Daniel (0-2) took the loss in relief for the 'Canes, giving up four runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings and striking out five.
In the first game, GSW scored a run in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie and secure the win.
With two outs and a runner on second, Young singled to bring the winning run home home.
Frank Ambrosino improved to 2-2 on the year, allowing four runs (one earned) in eight innings of work. He struck out eight and walked two. Chase Johnston (3-1) took the loss in relief for the Jags.
Saggus led ASU offensively, going a combined 4-for-8 with two runs, two RBI, and notching two steals. Jarrod Taylor (3-for-5, run, RBI) paced the Hurricanes.
The same two teams return to Lake Olmstead Stadium tomorrow for the rubber match. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
