AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State dropped both games of a PBC doubleheader to USC Aiken Sunday, falling 2-1 in the first game and 13-0 in the nightcap.
The Jaguars (6-13, 1-8 PBC) jumped on the board first, as Kevin Dodson's RBI single to right brought Caleb Saggus home for the lead.
Josh Barks started strong for ASU, pitching a shutout through six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. A double, mishandled bunt, RBI groundout to second, and eventual RBI single to center put the Pacers up 2-1 when the carnage was cleared.
The Jags threatened in the ninth, as Justin Thigpen got a pinch-hit walk, then advanced to second on Preston Pye's sacrifice bunt. A balk moved him to third, and Zach Murray earned a one out walk. But Clay Tucker, pinch-running for Murray, was gunned down at second on steal attempt, and a comebacker to the mound ended the game.
Barks fell to 2-3 on the season, giving up two runs (one earned) in 6 2/3 innings. He gave up five hits and struck out five.
Ryan Milewski (3-0) took the win for the Pacers, giving up a run in six innings. Jake Padgett shut the door in the ninth for his third save.
In the second game, USC Aiken scored four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to break a tight game wide open and coast to victory. They were aided by four ASU errors that led to four unearned runs.
Jeff Rice led the Jags offensively on the day with two hits in the second game.
ASU returns to action Tuesday, March 6 against St. Andrews at Lake Olmstead Stadium in a single game. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m.
