AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State claimed a pair of non-conference matches Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C., at Hannah Gym on the campus of Converse College.
With the pair of 3-0 victories over Barton and Converse, the Jaguars improved to 7-3 and matched the 2009 squad for the best start in school history (through 10 matches).
Sophomore Kristen Koch led the way vs. Barton with 14 kills while freshmen Leslye Barnett (six) and Kailla Baptiste (six) and sophomore Alex Rohlfing (five) combined for 17. Senior setter Krystin Wahlig netted 22 assists, four kills and an ace and sophomore Lauren Alverson managed 11 assists of her own. Senior Mandy Irizarry (13) and sophomore Collette Richards (12) logged 25 digs.
Against Converse, junior Jenna Killer notched a team-high eight kills while Barnette (six), Baptiste (five), Koch (five) and freshman Katie Beresford (four) combined for 20 putdowns. Alverson (16) and Wahlig (10) booked 26 assists and Richards paced the squad with 16 digs and Irizarry added nine. Barnett was credited with three aces, while Alverson and Irizarry had two each.
ASU hosts non-conference foe Newberry on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
