Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ala. – Augusta State split its pair of games on day two of the Charger Chillout, earning the first win of the season over University of Charleston (W. Va.) 8-3 Saturday night.
ASU (1-7) dropped its first contest against North Alabama, 5-3. UNA went up 4-0 in the second inning, after two strikeouts from ASU starting left-hander Haley Birkle (0-4). Two singles to left field started the inning and UNA freshman Nikki Hodges plated the first Lion, with a single up the middle. Back-to-back singles from senior Summer Wilkerson and freshman Harlie Barkley brought in three more RBIs.
In the fourth, ASU's Molly Walton, Casey Rowland and Lauren Yeargan all singled, with Yeargan scoring Walton on a base hit up the middle. Rowland homered to center in the top of the sixth for ASU's first home run of the season, plating Walton who reached on an error to bring it to 4-3.
The Lions added one more in their half of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to center field for a 5-3 final score. Sophomore Breanna Riley went 5.0 innings in the Lions' win, giving up five hits for one run and striking out two.
Birkle took the loss, giving up 10 hits and five runs with two strikeouts. Rowland went 2-for-4 and Yeargan went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
UNA's Barkley, Steadman, and Ashley Bonner all went 2-for-3 in the win.
Against Charleston, Yeargan went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of runs driven in, while Rowland was 2-for-5. Kristen Bagley drove in three runs and Brooke Stephens and Laura Brown had two hits each.
The Jags tallied a season-high 12 hits and Kristen Mills went the distance on the mound, yielding seven hits and three runs.
The Diamond Jags wrap up the Charger Chillout tomorrow, Feb. 17 against Florida Tech and Indianapolis at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
