DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Jaguars won 8-2 behind senior Kip Custer's game-one start, but were shutout 11-0 in game two at North Georgia to split the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.
The Jags (9-11, 2-5 PBC) put a 4-0 spot on the Nighthawks (9-7, 1-3) by the fourth inning – scoring one run in the first, second, and two in the third. Senor Jeff Rice hit a solo home run in the first off of UNG starter Brandon Agar for the first run. In the second, senior Ross Miles started a string of three-straight singles where he scored on freshman Chase Loyd's through the right side. Senior Ryan Khan scored Rice on a single for a 4-0 Jaguar lead.
Eason Spivey's RBI-single got the Nighthawks on the board in the fifth off GRU starter Kip Custer, but Miles and Loyd slapped their second singles to start GRU's seventh. Freshman Tyler Roberts roped a two-run double for a 6-1 lead. Custer (3-3) was solid in his 6.0 innings, allowing five hits for one run and striking out two before Tristan Jones got his second save of the year in 3.0 innings of work.
Rice went 3-for-4 in game one with three runs and three RBI. Miles was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and Loyd went 3-for-4. The Jags' 14 hits gave UNG's Agar (4-1) his first loss of the year in 7.0 innings.
Tremayne Toorie started the second game with a double off GRU starter Clint Echols. Echols (2-1) didn't last long as he recorded 2.0 innings and gave up six hits for five runs before he was pulled for Will Robertson. UNG held a 6-0 lead over the Jags and compiled upon it to take an 11-0 game-two win. Echols got the loss, while the Jags threw five arms at the Nighthawks who totaled 17 hits to GRU's three.
Clint Spratlin (2-1) took the win for the Nighthawks in 9.0 innings of work where held to the Jags to three hits and dealt nine strikeouts. Tyler Roberts, Rice, and Connor Gilbert all had one hit for the Jaguars who conclude the PBC series with the Nighthawks tomorrow, March 9 for a 2:00 p.m. single game at Bob Stein Stadium.
