Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two of the Peach Belt Conference series against No. 17 USC Aiken, but went on to give up 25 hits to the Pacers in the 19-7 loss Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Matt Hissong got the call to the mound versus the Jags (16-25, 8-15 PBC) to start things for the Pacers, giving up a first-inning lead when Connor Gilbert plated JD Sabo after the two each hit singles. The Pacers (28-10, 15-8 PBC) tied the game with a fielder's choice in the second and got some help from the Jaguar defense when JD Sabo misplayed a single in left field that cleared the bases for a 4-1 lead.
The Jags drew a leadoff walk off Hissong in the bottom of the second. Zach Murray slapped an opposite-field shot through the left side to advance runners and Bradley Dennis cut the USCA lead to three runs with a sacrifice fly to left field. With two outs, Tyler Roberts sat back and pulled a two-RBI single into left field to knot the game at 4-all.
Retaking the lead in the next inning, USCA capitalized on more Jaguar errors to take a 7-4 lead advantage. GRU Augusta committed four errors total on the day. The Pacer offense took over in the fourth when they scored four runs off four hits. Ty Barkell singled midway through the inning to put runners on first and third. Tyler Moore stole home as Barkell took second and Ryan Metzler's double got under the glove of a diving Ross Miles in centerfield for a 9-4 USCA lead.
Jags lefty Frank Warren was pulled halfway through the fifth for Will Robertson. Robertson hit Sean Miller to load the bases and gave up a run on a sac fly to left field. The Pacers batted around in the fifth to eventually build a 13-5 lead by the fifth inning. Warren (4-5) pitched 4.0 innings and gave up 11 hits for nine runs, but just five of them earned in his loss. Robertson relieved in 3.0 innings to give up four more runs on nine hits.
Freshman lefty Tyler Grooms entered the mound for the Jags in the eighth to strike out his first two batters faced, but the Pacers scored four on the lefty for a 19-7 final. Hissong (4-1) got the win after he struck out three and allowed nine hits in his 6.0 innings of work in the start. Sam Daniel, Hunter Hubbard, and Jake Padgett all relieved for an inning to close out the game.
Game three concludes the series with the Jags and Pacers tomorrow afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Lake Olmstead.
