Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – Jaguar starter Clint Echols posted his longest outing of the season in his complete game of work, keeping No. 17 USC Aiken to only two runs on four hits in the 2-1 Peach Belt Conference loss to the Pacers on Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
GRU Augusta (16-26, 8-16 PBC) outhit Aiken 7-to-4, but couldn't conjure any runs against three different arms from the Pacer bullpen for USCA to take the three-game sweep.
Echols walked the first two USC Aiken (30-10, 16-8 PBC) batters of the game, but senior catcher Ryan Khan hosed Kody Belcher on a steal attempt to help end the inning. Echols wasn't phased in the top of the second when the Pacers got runners to second and third. He dealt a strikeout and produced a grounder to shortstop Tyler Roberts, to end the inning for a scoreless game.
Neither team plated a run until the top of the sixth inning when TJ Costen lined one past Ross Miles in centerfield for an inside the park home run to score two runs after Kody Belcher drew a leadoff walk. Roberts lead off the Jags' seventh inning with a single to center field and Hunter Boose followed with a hit into left field. Connor Gilbert advanced runners on a sac bunt for Ryan Khan to get the Jags on the board with a sac fly to left field, cutting the USCA lead to 2-1.
USCA starter Taylor Peed (5-1) hit two batters to load the bases in the seventh inning, but got Chase Loyd to line out to centerfield to end the inning. Peed was pulled after 7.0 innings of work, allowing five hits for one run and dealing five strikeouts. Ben Black gave up consecutive singles to left field in the eighth inning, but the Jags couldn't produce as James Lynch came in to close out the ninth for the 2-1 win.
Senior JD Sabo and freshman Tyler Roberts went 2-for-4 in the one and two spots, while Chase Loyd and Bradley Dennis went 1-for-3. The Jags left 22 men on base in the three-game series, including six today in the one-run affair.
The Jags travel to Hartsville, S.C. on Wednesday, April 16 to play their last non-conference game of the year at Coker for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
