Jags Baseball Sweeps Paine In Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUGUSTA, Ga.  – Junior Drew Taylor drove in two RBI to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead after the first inning of each game as the GRU Augusta baseball team outscored Paine College 26-5 over two games and won two non-conference games 12-5 and 14-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Valentine's Day.

Matthew Kuhlenberg (1-1) made his second start of the season and struck out three in the first inning of work. Kuhlenberg got the win in 6.0 innings, surrendering three hits and striking out six on the day. Will Robertson relieved Kuhlenberg on the hill and tossed 2.0 innings to record one allowed hit and one strike out – taking a shutout into the ninth inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Jaguar (3-3) offense came alive when Drew Taylor belted his second standup triple of the season to score Nick Rau from first base for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Christopher Michals drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base, but the Jags couldn't get the man to strand a runner. They left 11 men on base in game one.

GRU's lead climbed to 4-0 in the fourth when they scored three runs on one hit and two errors and in the fifth they poured it on. Bradley Dennis lined an RBI-single into right field and after back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Tyler Roberts laid down a bunt for a base hit to build the lead to 6-0.

Paine relieved starting pitcher Raul Sweeney in the sixth and brought in Darrel Render Jr. Sweeney took the loss and pitched 5.0 innings to give up six runs total on seven hits. The Jags got to Render Jr. in the seventh and added five runs on four hits and two errors for an 11-0 advantage.

Paine batted around in the ninth inning and broke open the shutout in the  ninth with five scored runs, but David Bermudez got the final out to give the Jags a 12-5 final. Bradley Dennis was 2-4 with three scored runs, Brent Alford went 2-3 with a run and RBI, and Tyler Roberts and Hunter Boose added two hits.

In game two, the Jaguars brought eight men to the plate in their first at bat and went ahead 2-0 off of Drew Taylor's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk. The lead increased in third when junior catcher Cole Thompson blasted a standup double to clear the bases before Tyler Roberts and Hunter Boose knocked consecutive singles to build an 8-0 score.

The Jags cruised to a 14-0 final, while GRU starter David Hagelston (1-0) got the first win of his young career. Hagelston went 4.0 innings and gave up three hits and no runs in the win. The Jags knocked 11 hits in game two total.

Paine's Quentin Alsbrook tossed 2.2 innings in the start and allowed eight runs on four hits. GRU hosts Tamps on Friday, Feb. 20 for a 6:00 p.m. single non-conference game at LOS.
