Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars (27-11, 16-5 PBC) recorded double-digit hits for the 32nd game this season and knocked 11 hits to sweep the No. 5 USC Aiken Pacers (30-9, 19-8 PBC) 6-2 in game three on Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Jaguars have won eight games in a row and swept their fourth Peach Belt Conference series of the season to steal first place
Augusta took care of game one against No. 5 USC Aiken and sealed the series with agame-two blowout win for eight wins in a row.
In game three, Augusta was led offensively by local product Hunter Boose from Evans, Ga. Boose went 3-4 with a run and RBI and senior Cole Thompson was 2-4 with two RBI and a run. Senior Nick Rau, who made a game-ending diving catch at second base, also was 2-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Jim Wagner picked up two hits with an RBI.
Junior Jamal Cummings stole another base and is now 11-12 on stolen-base attempts in his 20 games played.
In their new white pinstripe uniforms, the Jags scored their first run after three pitches into the game, when junior Clint Hardy leadoff with a first-pitch triple and Boose brought him in with a liner up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
Jags' C. Thompson, who had eight RBI in a 4-5 day on Saturday, carded the next run with a shot to center to push the advantage up 2-0.
Jags lefty junior Will Thompson (5-2) logged his 11th start and his 11th appearance and only allowed six hits for two runs (one earned) while dealing four strikeouts.
The Jags tacked on another run in the third, but the Pacers took one back with a groundball RBI in the fourth off the bat of Zach Moon that scored Chaz Pal for an unearned run.
Boose slapped his third hit of the game to start the bottom of the fifth and C. Thompson picked up another RBI. Wagner followed with an RBI single to left center and after USCA brought in new pitcher Nick Jobst, Augusta senior Nick Rau welcomed him to the game with a liner up the middle for a 6-1 score.
Aiken loaded the bases in the seventh, but W. Thompson got out of the inning with a fly ball. The Jags went to C.J. Reed and Frank Warren on the mound to close the game as Augusta prevailed 6-2.
USCA senior Joe Marlow (6-1) gave up 10 hits in his 4.1 innings pitched to allow six runs (four earned) for his first loss of the season.
In the top of the ninth, USCA had runners on with two outs when Rau fully extended his bottom to make a diving double play that ended the game.
Augusta is receiving national votes for the top 25 and are ranked No. 6 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Southeast Region poll and first in the PBC. USC Aiken leads the region and is ranked No. 5 in the nation.
