Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C. – The Augusta Jaguars continued the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday with a doubleheader and fell 3-2 to Columbus State and 3-1 to North Georgia at Sparrow Stadium on the campus of Francis Marion University. The tournament was originally scheduled for the Jags to meet CSU on Thursday, but inclement postponed it for a doubleheader on Friday.
Seeded fifth in the PBC Tourney, Augusta (29-22) ends the year with the first winning season since 2008. The games marked the last collegiate competition for Jaguar seniors David Bermudez, Hunter Boose, Phil Dukes, Connor Gilbert, Nick Rau, C.J. Reed, Drew Taylor, Cole Thompson, and Frank Warren.
The Jaguars struck early in their first game of day two action against Columbus State. Back-to-back doubles from junior Clint Hardy and senior Hunter Boose started the Jaguar offense. Boose's hit plated Hardy for a 1-0 lead in the first.
Columbus State tied the game in the next inning on a sacrifice fly, but sophomore Jim Wagner tied the game with his first home run of the season and the second of his collegiate career for a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
The Jags got the leadoff man on base in three of the first four innings of the game to give their starting pitcher Tristan Jones an early lead to work off.
In the fifth, the CSU Cougars stole a 3-2 lead when they scored a pair on a single and throwing error. CSU held the Jags scoreless the rest of the way to seal the one-run win.
Jones (7-5) went 8.0 innings on the hill and allowed nine hits for three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts.
Hardy was 3-5 in game one and Boose and junior Jamal Cummings each had two hits, while Wagner was 1-3 with the homer.
In Augusta's second game of the day, eighth seeded North Georgia put up a 3-0 spot in the third inning and the Jags never recovered. Sophomore Gage Patton doubled to start the Jaguars' eighth inning and he scored on Cummings' groundball. The one run wasn't enough as UNG held on for a 3-1 final.
Augusta used five pitchers in against North Georgia and freshman Chase Slone (0-1) took the loss in his one inning of relief work after sophomore David Hagelston made the start.
The PBC is utilizing a pool-play format that gave each of the eight participating teams three games over a four-day span.
After four days, one team will stand atop each pool and meet in the final on Sunday with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament at stake.
