'More than the Sport' is the new spotlight series about Augusta University athletes written by a fellow Augusta University student.
Â
Augusta University has over 250 athletes in the 14 sports teams. With this many athletes it can be hard to get to know them personally. But they compete for this school, and we should get to know who they are. Starting off with senior volleyball player
Janvier Buggs.
Â
Buggs came to AU in the fall of 2023 last minute due to some events that led her to decommit from another school. She even said this school wasn't on her radar at all until a series of connections got her in touch with assistant coach Deja Moorer. But she has never been more thankful that it has led her to where she is now.
Â
"We're a hidden gem for sure. And all of these girls deserve this chance. So, I'm excited. I'm proud. And I have no regrets about transferring here to end my career," said Buggs.
Â
The volleyball setter didn't start playing the sport until eighth grade; she was actually a dancer before that. It was her best friend that actually got her to try out for the sport.
Â
"So I went to try out, and I was bad. Like really bad," told Buggs.
Â
She admitted that not everyone can be great from the start, but she was thankful for the coaches who saw potential in her and pushed her to be the athlete she is today.
Â
When not playing volleyball Janvier enjoys going thrifting, checking out new restaurants, going to concerts, and spending time outdoors. She really loves to spend time with her friends and family. Her favorite memory, in fact, is a recent one over the summer when she went to Puerto Rico with her dad's family.
Â
"You know that unconditional love is just priceless, like you just feel so supported, and obviously the tropical view was amazing," she said.
Â
Buggs has no regrets about the way her volleyball career is going to end, and she is excited to see what this new chapter of her life will bring. But she still has one season left before she walks across the stage to get her degree in digital marketing this December.
Â
Janvier Buggs is determined to end this season with a bang so be sure to attend the volleyball games to support them.
Â
"This is my last season and we have a great group of girls. We can make it all the way, we can do it," said Buggs.
