Augusta, Ga. - The spring portion of the schedule for the Augusta University women's golf team is just about here as the Jaguars are anxious to get back on the course. They will start the spring in Arizona at the BGSU Women's Collegiate Feb.10-11.
The Jags showed positive signs with a pair of sixth place finishes in the fall giving them some momentum for when the scores start counting again.
"We had a lot of good things come out of the fall," said interim coach Alison Crenshaw. "We had a lot of underclassmen and freshmen step up and showed out and gave us momentum which is awesome to see. Then we had our upperclassmen and seniors, and leaders you could say, do their job and executed."
Freshmen
Sofia Valera and
Puntita Pawichai each registered top 20 finishes in the fall. As did senior
Marine Legentil, who finished 16th at the Tiger Classic.
Legentil, along with juniors
Sara Adams and
Keira Gonzalez-McCarthy give the Jaguars that stability of having played in a number of big events. The experience factor will go a long way in assisting the newcomers to the team.
"I think the wisdom of the experienced players brings with it a unique set of skills. The leadership and day to day role modeling the upperclassmen can bring is priceless," said Crenshaw.
The AU women won't have played in a tournament since October, so getting the team into that tournament mode has been the focus coming out of the break.
"What I'm trying to make sure I'm intentional about is about competition and execution under pressure," said Crenshaw. "Just getting back and fine tuning those little thing and just getting everybody warmed back up and ready to compete."
The spring portion of the schedule is highlighted by the Jaguars playing at Forest Hills Golf Club in the Valspar Augusta Invitational in mid-March and then competing in the West Coast Conference Championship in California in April.
