MORROW, Ga. -- Clayton State held Augusta State
to a season-low point total and defeated the Jaguars 65-55 Saturday
night in a Peach Belt Conference matchup of nationally-ranked teams
at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
The No. 25 Lakers remained undefeated, improving to 9-0 and 2-0 in
the PBC. Seventh-ranked ASU dropped to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the
league.
Junior guard Ben Madgen had 14 points for ASU and Daniel Dixon
registered 11, all in the first half. Senior center Garret Siler
was held in check, posting eight points, nine rebounds and two
blocks.
Bernard Fields paced the Lakers with 20 points and Will Lewis
tallied 14. Brian Kelly grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
ASU, which shot a season-low 31.7 percent from the field, dropped
fell to 13-5 all-time vs. nationally-ranked opponents under
fifth-year head coach Dip Metress. The loss also marked the first
setback on the road for the Jags this season.
The Lakers shot 60.9 percent in the second half and outscored ASU
40-25 after the Jags went into halftime with a 30-25 lead.
ASU owned a 35-29 advantage following a Steve Smith basket with
17:37 left in the game. The Lakers bounced back with an 8-0 spurt
that included six points from Fields to move in front 37-35.
The Jags regained a 43-40 lead on a three-point play from Smith
with 11:09 to play. A pair of Freddie Williams layups gave the
Lakers a 44-43 edge a minute later before Madgen gave ASU a 45-44
lead on two free throws at the 9:41 mark.
Clayton had the final answer, putting together a 13-1 run that
Fields capped with a trey for a 57-46 lead with 5:01 to play. The
Jags, who went the final 11:09 without a field goal, never got
closer than seven the rest of the way.
ASU hosts USC Aiken in the first matchup of top-10
nationally-ranked teams in Peach Belt Conference history on Monday,
Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
